Colin Robertson

Colin Robertson – Scottish Landscape Artist

Colin Robertson is a contemporary Scottish landscape painter celebrated for his atmospheric, impressionistic depictions of the Highlands, Lowlands, and remote wildernesses of Scotland. Born and based in Scotland, Robertson studied painting and drawing at Edinburgh Art College from 1985–1989, later establishing himself as a dedicated landscape artist exhibiting across the country. His work is shaped by a deep connection to the quiet, meditative spaces of the natural world, where shifting light and weather patterns continually transform the land.

Robertson’s instinctive approach focuses on mood and movement rather than strict realism. Soft brushwork, subtle tonal shifts, and a harmonious palette give his paintings a serene, immersive quality. He often works in alkyd—a quick-drying medium that, once varnished, closely resembles oil—which he finds especially suited to capturing atmospheric effects. For outdoor sketching and rapidly changing conditions, he turns to acrylic to respond intuitively to the landscape.

His paintings feature locations such as Glencoe, Braemar, Dunkeld, Edinburgh, and the West Highlands, conveying both the drama and stillness of Scotland’s terrain.
