John Bathgate

We are thrilled to introduce you to the exceptional work of John Bathgate, a highly respected artist whose paintings capture the essence of Scotland’s rugged landscapes.

Born in 1949 in Langcroft Farm near Lauder, John Bathgate’s early years were spent in the rolling Border country. He later joined the Royal Navy, which took him to various parts of the world, gaining experiences and inspiration that would eventually shape his unique style of art. After working in different fields such as newspaper photography and farming, he taught himself how to draw and paint.

John’s passion for art led him to further his education at night school, where he trained under Robert Fraser and became a member of the Lothian Group of artists in 1979. His skills and talent continued to grow over the years, and in 1992, he moved to Skye, where he established his studio in Roskhill.

From his studio, John uses various media, including water-based materials, to create stunning interpretations of Scotland’s natural elements. His works often incorporate acrylics with integrated collages, resulting in pieces that are visually captivating and thought-provoking.
