Description
“Highland Dance at Stirling” is a vibrant artwork by Scottish artist Janet McCrorie, renowned for her dynamic depictions of traditional Scottish dance. In this piece, McCrorie captures the energy and movement of Highland dancers performing against the historic backdrop of Stirling, a city rich in Scottish heritage.
McCrorie’s distinctive style involves the use of mixed media, allowing her to convey the fluidity and rhythm of dance. She employs a palette of vibrant colours, skilfully applied through scraping and scratching techniques, to depict the intricate patterns of tartan and the exuberance of the dancers’ movements. Her approach not only highlights the physicality of the dance but also evokes a sense of nostalgia, connecting viewers to Scotland’s cultural traditions.
Living in East Lothian, McCrorie has dedicated her career to teaching and creating art that reflects Scottish culture. She studied painting with the Open College of the Arts and at the Leith School of Art, under the mentorship of Jacqueline Watt and Damian Callan. Her passion for Scottish dance is evident in her frequent attendance at Highland dancing competitions, Scottish country dancing events, and ceilidhs across Scotland, where she gathers inspiration for her work. Since 2011, her paintings have been featured in the Royal Scottish Country Dancing Society’s Annual Review, underscoring her prominence in the Scottish art scene.
